  1. Heat oven to 350.
  2. In a large bowl, sift sugar, salt, baking soda, flour and baking powder.
  3. Add shortening and milk, stirring until combined.
  4. Stir in egg, vanilla extract and apples.
  5. Pour into square baking pan.
  6. In a small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, flour and pecans.
  7. Sprinkle topping on cake prior to baking.
  8. Bake for about 45 minutes or until done.
