50 years: Ice cream social set to return on Aug. 20

The Washington County Historical Society’s annual ice cream social will return for the first time in three years when the gates open at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, on the lawn of Headquarters House Museum at 118 E. Dickson St. in Fayetteville.

“This is the 50th anniversary of the ice cream social’s inception,” said Debbie Groom, the WCHS board member who is directing this year’s activity. “Because of the pandemic we haven’t had the ice cream social since 2019, so we want make it a memorable one for the public that has come out to support this event year after year.”

Refreshments will include ice cream provided by Hiland Dairy, assorted cookies, lemonade and water. Visitors may enjoy a stroll through the historic gardens or take a tour of Headquarters House Museum. Musical entertainment will be Bill Dollar and Loose Change.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $2.50 per child or $15 per family. Tickets will be on sale at the gate and can also be purchased in advance online at https://bit.ly/3J6NjyqX

Sponsors of this year’s ice cream social are Hiland Dairy, InTents and the Bank of Fayetteville. The event will be following the city of Fayetteville’s guidelines concerning COVID-19 for outdoor events and the servers will be wearing masks and gloves. The society extends special thanks to City of Fayetteville Waste and Recycling and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
