Ingredients

4 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cloves

3 sticks butter, softened

2 cups sugar, divided

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup molasses

2 eggs

1/2 cup sugar for rolling

Directions

Heat oven to 375.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves.

In a separate large bowl, beat together butter, 1 1/2 cups sugar and brown sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed. Add molasses and eggs, and mix until well-incorporated. Reduce mixer speed, and slowly add in flour mixture until well-combined.

Scoop out dough, and roll into 1-inch balls. Roll dough balls in remaining sugar to coat.

Place on greased or parchment-lined cookie sheets at least 1 inch apart. Bake for 9-11 minutes. Allow to cool for a minute before transferring to wire racks to finish cooling.

Note: I make these every Christmas, usually starting Dec. 1. It makes the house smell like the holidays. My Aunt Viv first shared this recipe with me, and I loved it from the start. It’s great to make the dough ahead of time and freeze it into balls. Once frozen, put frozen dough balls in a freezer bag. Before baking, allow them to thaw for about 5 minutes. Slightly flatten dough with fingertips on prepared cookie sheets. Bake at 375 for 10-13 minutes.
