With warmer temperatures, it might comfort people to learn that The Natural State is home to 33 rivers, spanning approximately 90,000 miles and more than 2,000 lakes covering nearly 600,000 acres. For our famously hot summers, watersports offer some of the most refreshing ways to enjoy Arkansas’ great outdoors while staying cool! If you’re looking for a place to start, here are a few organizations worth exploring.

For all things paddle sports, check out the Arkansas Canoe Club. Involving more than 1,000 members across 10 chapters, the club offers instruction on whitewater canoeing, kayaking and river paddling, along with local events designed to build skills and confidence on the water. Chapters frequently organize pool practice sessions when beginners can learn from experienced paddlers in a supportive environment.

The club also recently celebrated its 50th School of Whitewater Paddling on the Mulberry River. Over the years, the event has grown into one of the nation’s largest educational paddling programs, and a premier paddling gathering in the Mid-America region. Certified instructors and more than 150 participants come together for a weekend of learning, recreation and community. Find a local chapter and start perfecting your paddle and roll!

If you prefer moving backward while facing forward, consider rowing. The Rowing Club of Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas Boathouse Club in Little Rock both welcome newcomers and experienced rowers alike. Each organization maintains an active Facebook presence where prospective members can learn about summer schedules, training opportunities and club activities.

Both clubs also support youth rowing programs, offering coaching, summer camps and competitive training. These programs help prepare student-athletes for interscholastic competition and, in some cases, collegiate rowing opportunities. For female athletes in particular, rowing scholarships remain widely available at colleges and universities across the country.

Prefer to harness the wind? Founded in 1959, the Grande Maumelle Sailing Club continues to thrive. The club offers lessons for beginners, racing opportunities for experienced sailors and ways to learn the sport even without owning a sailboat. Its 345 members range from first-time sailors to world-class competitors. Because Arkansas lakes rarely freeze, the club hosts events throughout most of the year.

Whether you choose paddling, rowing or sailing, Arkansas offers countless opportunities to get outside and enjoy river and lake adventures this summer.

Have fun out on the water!
